Description
An insulin pen needle is a sterile, single-use needle that screws onto an insulin pen. Length determines which tissue layer the injection reaches: insulin must go into the subcutaneous fat, and a needle that reaches muscle speeds absorption and can cause an unexpected drop in blood glucose. Current practice therefore favours shorter needles for most adults and children; your doctor or diabetes nurse decides which of the 4, 5, 6 and 8 mm options is right for you, and you should not change length on your own. Use a fresh needle for every injection. Reusing a needle blunts it and bends the tip microscopically, which makes injections painful and contributes over time to the firm swellings at injection sites known as lipohypertrophy — insulin absorbed from those areas becomes erratic. Rotate your injection sites. Used needles must not go into household waste; collect them in a puncture-resistant sharps container. Check that the packaging is intact before fitting a needle to the pen.
