Description
Bactigras is an antiseptic wound contact dressing made from leno-weave gauze impregnated with soft paraffin and containing 5% chlorhexidine acetate BP. It is used as a low-adherent contact layer on minor burns and scalds at risk of infection, on lacerations, abrasions and other wounds with skin loss, and is also chosen for graft donor and recipient sites. Its defining property is that it does not stick to the wound — which is what allows the dressing to be lifted at a change without damaging newly formed tissue. The open tulle weave lets exudate pass through to an absorbent secondary dressing placed on top, so Bactigras is not used alone; it needs a second dressing over it. The chlorhexidine acetate it carries is released slowly into the wound and stays active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria over a prolonged period. The product is sterile and individually wrapped, and should not be used if the packaging is damaged. Anyone with known chlorhexidine sensitivity should consult a doctor before use.
