Description
The Flutter is a pipe-shaped respiratory physiotherapy device that fits in the palm of your hand. Inside it a steel ball rests in a cone; as you breathe out through the mouthpiece the ball lifts and drops, producing both positive pressure in the airway and a vibration repeated many times a second. The positive pressure helps hold small airways open, while the vibration helps thick mucus separate from the bronchial wall, so sputum can be cleared with less effort when you cough. It is used on the advice of a doctor or physiotherapist in conditions where secretions build up, such as bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, chronic bronchitis and COPD. No batteries or mains power are involved, so it travels easily between home, work and holidays. Getting the benefit depends on the length of each breath out and the number of sets being matched to you — ask your physiotherapist for a plan before starting. The device comes apart for washing and, for hygiene, should be used by one person only.
