Description
A nasal cannula delivers oxygen through two soft prongs that sit in the nostrils. At low and moderate flow rates it is the most widely used interface for home oxygen therapy; unlike a mask it does not have to be removed to speak, eat or sleep, which markedly improves adherence during long-term treatment. The prongs are soft and shaped to put minimal pressure inside the nose. The product is latex-free, so it can be used safely in patients with latex sensitivity. The flexible, kink-resistant tubing keeps the flow from being cut off in patients who move around on a long tube. The cannula is for single patient use and should not be shared. Two points matter in continuous use: dry oxygen irritates the nasal mucosa, so run the flow through a humidifier bottle, and shift the tubing position during the day so pressure marks do not form behind the ears or on the nostril rims. Avoid petroleum-based creams such as petroleum jelly around the nose; they are not appropriate for use with oxygen.
