Description
A suction catheter is a thin, flexible tube used with a suction unit to clear secretions from the airway in patients who cannot cough them up themselves. Regular suctioning is necessary to keep the airway clear in bed-bound patients, in people with a tracheostomy, and where a neurological condition has weakened the cough reflex. One end of the catheter connects to the suction tubing while the other is advanced through the mouth, nose or tracheostomy tube. Two points govern the procedure: the catheter must be kept sterile and used once only — reusing a catheter directly increases the risk of infection; and each suction pass must be kept brief, since prolonged suction causes the patient's oxygen level to fall. Catheter size is chosen according to the patient's age and airway diameter; the wrong size means either inadequate suction or injury to the mucosa.
