Description
Examination gloves are the basic barrier that reduces two-way transmission risk between patient and healthcare worker. The differences between the three options determine which suits your use. Powdered latex gloves are easy to don and economical, but the powder becomes airborne carrying latex protein with it, which makes them the least preferred option where sensitisation is a concern. Powder-free latex gloves offer high elasticity and good tactile sensitivity, making them comfortable for fine work and long wear. Nitrile gloves contain no latex, so they are the only suitable choice for staff and patients with a latex allergy; they also resist puncture and many chemicals better than latex, which is why they are favoured for cleaning and disinfectant work. Choose the correct size: a loose glove makes gripping difficult, while a tight glove tears and tires the hand. Gloves do not replace hand hygiene — clean your hands both before donning and after removing them. Gloves are single use; change them between patients and procedures, and never wash and reuse them.
