Description
Hallux valgus is recognised by the big toe drifting outward and a bony prominence — a bunion — forming at its base. A hallux valgus splint supports the area by positioning the toe in the opposite direction. The night splint is rigid or hinged and holds the toe in a corrected position while you sleep; it is not worn for walking. For daytime, a soft bandage-type model is used instead — it fits inside a shoe and protects the prominence by reducing pressure on it. Day-and-night use means combining these two approaches. The splint is one size and is adapted to the foot with straps; check the fixation, since straps pulled too tight can leave the toe numb. A splint does not provide a surgical correction in advanced deformity — your doctor should decide which model to use and for how long.
