Description
A metatarsal pad is a support used when the transverse arch of the forefoot collapses. Once that arch flattens, body weight bears directly on the metatarsal heads at the base of the toes; the usual result is pain that worsens on standing, thickened skin across the ball of the foot and callus formation. The pad sits just behind the arch, supporting the collapsed area from below and spreading the load more evenly between the metatarsal heads, which reduces the pressure concentrated at one point and helps release muscle spasm. Correct positioning is critical with this product: the pad must sit behind the metatarsal heads, not on top of them; placed wrongly it increases the complaint rather than easing it. Size is chosen by forefoot circumference: Small 18–19 cm, Medium 20–21 cm, Large 22–23 cm, X-Large 24–25 cm and XX-Large 26 cm. Take the measurement standing, with the foot bearing weight. Wear the pad for short periods at first to let the foot adapt. If you have reduced sensation, an open wound or diabetes, consult your doctor before use; any product that changes pressure distribution should be used under supervision in those cases.
