Description
Suprasorb A + Ag combines calcium alginate fibre derived from natural brown seaweed with silver alginate fibre, giving a total of 1.5% ionic silver. As the dressing absorbs wound fluid it gels through ion exchange; the gel traps bacteria within it while releasing silver ions into the wound bed. In vitro testing has shown activity against a broad range of organisms including MRSA and VRE. It is therefore used on infected or infection-prone wounds with moderate to high exudate: pressure ulcers, arterial and venous ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, surgical wounds and skin graft donor sites. In use the dressing should be laid loosely in the wound rather than packed tightly, and secured with a secondary dressing — packing it tightly interferes with gel formation and fluid handling. Depending on exudate level it can remain in place for up to seven days. The dressing is sterile and individually sealed; a 30 × 2 cm packing rope is available for deep or cavity wounds.
