Description

An articulator is a mechanical instrument that holds upper and lower plaster casts in the patient's jaw relationship and reproduces jaw movement in the laboratory. On an adjustable type, parameters such as condylar inclination and intercondylar relationship can be set for the individual case, so occlusion can be assessed not only in the closed position but also through lateral and protrusive excursions. The incisal pin fixes the vertical dimension, keeping the closing height reproducible during tooth set-up and waxing. Casts are mounted to the upper and lower members with plaster, and the accuracy of that mounting directly determines how much occlusal adjustment will be needed chairside afterwards. Typical uses are complete and partial denture set-up, occlusal adjustment in crown and bridge work, and the fabrication of occlusal splints. Compared with a simple occludator, it simulates lateral and forward jaw movement rather than opening and closing alone. When choosing one, check that the joints seat without play and that the incisal pin stays fixed, since both determine how long the instrument stays accurate.
