Description
A casting ingot is the piece of chrome-cobalt alloy melted in the dental laboratory to turn an invested wax pattern into metal. After burnout, the ingot is melted in the crucible and driven into the mould cavity by a centrifugal or vacuum casting machine. Chrome-cobalt alloys have a high melting range and hardness, so the correct crucible type and the manufacturer's casting regime must be used: underheated metal will not fill the mould, while overheated metal loses its mechanical properties. Mixing alloys of different brands or types in the same crucible is not advised, as it leads to unpredictable melting behaviour and porous castings. Metal recovered from sprues and buttons should only be used in limited proportion with new ingot and only after cleaning. Being sold by the piece makes it easy to weigh out the amount a particular case needs.
