Description

This group covers the three basic handpieces that attach to a dental unit. The air turbine (airotor) is a high-speed head driven by compressed air; used with diamond burs for cavity preparation and for sectioning old restorations and crowns, its water/air spray limits heating of the tooth during rapid cutting. The contra-angle is an angled low-speed head that fits a micromotor and is chosen for procedures needing controlled torque, such as caries removal, widening an endodontic access cavity, or prophylaxis with a brush. The straight handpiece is a low-speed head used mainly outside the mouth for adjusting and polishing prostheses. Together the three make up the basic instrument set on a dental unit, which is why they are common in student kits and in newly equipped surgeries. Before ordering, confirm that the coupling matches the existing unit — a 2- or 4-hole coupling for the turbine and the micromotor standard for the contra-angle and straight handpiece. Service life depends largely on maintenance: lubricating each head with the manufacturer's oil before every sterilisation cycle delays bearing and turbine wear.
