Description
Finishing discs are flexible abrasive discs used to remove excess, contour and polish composite restorations. Mounted on a mandrel and run in a contra-angle, the flexible backing follows the curvature of the tooth, giving more controlled work on the proximal and facial surfaces of anterior teeth than most other finishing instruments. The grits must be worked from coarse to fine without skipping a grade: if a step is missed, the scratches left by the coarser disc are not removed by the finer one and the surface stays dull. Working at low speed with light pressure and water cooling avoids heating the composite and prevents dull patches on the surface. A smooth surface reduces plaque accumulation and marginal staining, so it matters for the longevity of the restoration as much as for its appearance. The discs are single use; a worn disc scratches rather than polishes.
