Description
The laboratory torch is the basic heat source of a dental prosthetics laboratory. It turns combustible gas into a directed flame whose length and intensity can be set with a valve to suit the task. Its main use is wax work: softening sheet wax, heating the spatula during wax modelling, joining wax sections by melting them together, and adapting a baseplate to the cast. It is also used to heat metal hand instruments and for small soldering and annealing jobs. Precise flame control matters: an over-powerful flame scorches wax, leaves soot on the surface and alters the dimensional behaviour of the pattern, which shows up later as a fit error in the casting. The torch should stand on a ventilated bench section away from flammable materials, and the gas connection and hose should be checked regularly for leaks. Cleaning the flame orifice periodically keeps the flame even and correctly directed.
