Description

Gates Glidden drills are the rotary instruments used in root canal treatment to open the canal orifice and prepare a path that lets files enter the coronal third in a straight line. The short flame-shaped head cuts only laterally; because the tip does not cut, the instrument follows the canal wall and the risk of creating a ledge is reduced. They are used at low speed in a contra-angle, working crown-down and from larger to smaller sizes, a sequence that removes coronal interference and makes the working length measurement more reliable. They are not used in curved parts of the canal or in the apical third, where a binding instrument can cause perforation or strip the wall. The rings on the shank indicate the size, so the right drill is picked quickly from the set. Gates drills are designed to fracture at the neck; work without burying the instrument completely so a fragment can be retrieved, and discard drills that have been fatigued.
