Description
Cotton pliers are the sprung hand instrument used to pick up small items and carry them into the mouth. Their angled, tapering tips hold cotton pellets and rolls, paper points, burs and matrix bands without slipping, and the tips spring apart again as soon as finger pressure is released. Their clinical value lies in moving sterile material from the tray to the patient without hand contact, which directly reduces the risk of cross contamination. Together with the mirror and the explorer, they are the third fixed component of every examination set. The stainless steel body is suited to steam sterilisation and the tips stay aligned over repeated cycles as long as the instrument is not deformed. Grip weakens as soon as the tips no longer meet cleanly, so pliers that have been dropped or sprung open should be checked.
