Description

The excavator is the basic restorative hand instrument used to scrape softened carious dentine out of a cavity. Its spoon-shaped, sharp-edged working end lifts the tissue in layers — slower than a rotary bur but far more controlled, which is why it is preferred in deep cavities close to the pulp and wherever sound dentine must be preserved. The two ends are set at opposing angles, so mesial and distal walls can be reached without changing instruments. The same instrument is used to remove temporary fillings and to clean away excess cement after crown cementation and surplus restorative material. Once the edge dulls it tends to crush rather than cut and the operator has to apply more force, so excavator sharpness should be checked as a routine. The stainless steel body is suited to steam sterilisation in an autoclave.
