Description
The oral spatula is a double-ended hand instrument used to mix restorative and cement materials, carry them to the cavity and shape the surface. Its flat, long and narrow working ends both pick up material and adapt it to the cavity margin once placed. What distinguishes it from a cement spatula is that the size and angle of the two blades are set for access inside the mouth, so posterior sites can be worked without reorienting the instrument. Adapting the material cleanly to the cavity margin matters for the life of the restoration, since it reduces overhangs and voids. Material left to set on the blade roughens the working face and changes the consistency of the next mix, so the spatula should be cleaned as soon as the procedure ends. The stainless steel body is suited to steam sterilisation.
