Description
The cement spatula is the double-ended mixing instrument used to prepare zinc phosphate, glass ionomer, polycarboxylate and temporary cements on a glass slab or mixing pad. Its flat, slightly flexible blades incorporate powder into the liquid in stages, and a homogeneous mix is what allows the cement to reach its intended film thickness and setting time. Poorly mixed cement can prevent a crown from seating fully and loses mechanical strength, so mixing technique bears directly on the success of the restoration. Clean the instrument as soon as the procedure ends, because cement setting on the blade changes the consistency and set of the next mix. Some glass ionomer cements are specified for a plastic rather than a metal spatula, so check the material's instructions for use. The stainless steel body is suited to steam sterilisation.
