Description
An Ivory-type matrix retainer is used to tension and hold a matrix band around a tooth in Class II cavities. The band replaces the missing proximal wall with a temporary one, and packing the restorative material against it preserves the contour of the restoration and its contact with the adjacent tooth. The retainer's screw mechanism draws the band tight and locks it in position so it cannot shift during placement. The band should always be used with an interdental wedge, which presses it against the cervical margin and reduces the risk of overhangs and marginal leakage. Because the Ivory design grips from one side, it seats quickly for restorations involving a single proximal surface. Debris in the screw housing seizes the mechanism, so the instrument should be cleaned after each use. The stainless steel body is suited to steam sterilisation.
