Description
A straight matrix retainer is the body that keeps a matrix band tensioned around the tooth during Class II amalgam and composite restorations. Its knurled nut mechanism reduces the diameter of the band loop, adapting the band to the tooth and locking it there so it cannot shift during condensation or layering. Because the band replaces the lost proximal wall and therefore determines the contour of the restoration and its contact with the neighbouring tooth, band tension and position bear directly on the quality of the filling. The straight body makes the instrument easier to seat in posterior sites and in patients with limited mouth opening. The band should always be supported with an interdental wedge, which seals the cervical margin and prevents overhangs. Debris in the adjusting nut and its housing seizes the mechanism, so the instrument needs regular cleaning. The stainless steel body is suited to steam sterilisation.
