Description

A dental caliper is the precision hand instrument used in the laboratory and chairside to measure material thickness in millimetres. Its most common use is checking the thickness of wax patterns, metal frameworks and crown walls, a measurement that sets the balance between the mechanical strength of a restoration and its fit. A framework that is too thin risks fracture in function, while one that is too thick disturbs the occlusion and the marginal fit. Clinically it is also used to check remaining tooth structure and the space available for the planned restoration after preparation. Reliable readings depend on measuring tips that are clean, true and undeformed; a caliper that has been dropped should be verified before further use. The stainless steel body is suited to steam sterilisation, and drying the moving mechanism after the cycle prevents corrosion.
