Description

The amalgam condenser is the instrument used to pack amalgam that has been delivered into the cavity in increments. Its tips are blunt and do not cut; their job is to press the material into the cavity floor, walls and retention areas so that no voids remain. Condensation is the decisive step of an amalgam restoration: adequate pressure brings excess mercury to the surface, increases the density of the material and reduces the risk of voids and marginal leakage. Amalgam should be added in thin increments rather than as one mass, with each layer condensed separately. The double-ended body offers working faces of different diameter, so the same instrument reaches narrow retention areas and the broad occlusal surface. Amalgam left on the working face spreads the applied pressure, so the tip should be cleaned during and after the procedure. The stainless steel body is suited to steam sterilisation.
