Description
The clasp plier is a straight-beaked plier used to bend and adapt retaining clasp wire on removable prostheses and orthodontic appliances. Its serrated inner surfaces stop the wire from slipping where it is gripped, so the bend starts exactly where intended and the form is repeatable. Precision matters here because adapting the clasp to the widest circumference of the tooth is what balances the retention of the prosthesis against the patient's ability to insert and remove it. The plier is also used for holding wire segments and small metal components. The serrations can leave light marks on the wire, and on visible or mucosa-contacting sections these should be removed by finishing and polishing. The stainless steel body is suited to steam sterilisation, and keeping the joint dry prevents corrosion.
