Description

The Angle plier is the orthodontic wire-bending instrument also known as a bird-beak plier, after the shape of its beaks. One beak is conical and the other pyramidal: bending wire around the conical beak produces rounded loops, while bending against the pyramidal beak produces sharp angles. Having both geometries in one instrument means clasps, springs and archwire bends can be formed without changing pliers. Because the diameter of the conical beak determines the radius of the bend, where the wire is gripped directly affects the resulting form. It is used chairside for adapting archwires and auxiliaries, and in the laboratory for fabricating removable appliances. Worn beak surfaces let the wire slip and reduce bending precision, so the plier should be inspected regularly and kept away from wires harder than it is rated for. The stainless steel body is suited to steam sterilisation.
