Description

Kerr impression compound is a thermoplastic material that softens when heated and hardens as it cools. The green type has a working temperature of 50–51 °C: the stick is softened in a water bath or over a flame within that range, shaped, seated in the mouth and left to harden at mouth temperature. Because the softening and setting are reversible, the same material can be reheated and reshaped until the required form is achieved. Its classic uses are single-tooth impressions with a copper band, border moulding of denture trays and bite registration. When heating over a flame the material must not be boiled: excess heat degrades it, and the temperature must be checked before seating to avoid burning the soft tissue. The product is sold by the piece; the original box holds 15 sticks with a net weight of 113 g. The material is not reused between patients.
