Description
A mouth prop is a silicone block that helps the patient hold the mouth open through long procedures and reduces fatigue in the jaw muscles. It is placed in the molar region on one side, and the ribbed surfaces grip the upper and lower teeth so the block does not slide during treatment. It keeps the working field stable in endodontics, surgery, paediatric cases and with special care patients who find sustained opening difficult. The perforated tab takes a safety cord or chain, a simple precaution that makes retrieval easy if the prop is dislodged. Choosing the right size matters: too large a prop loads the temporomandibular joint unnecessarily, while too small a one does not give enough access. After use the prop should be washed and disinfected according to the manufacturer's instructions.
