Description

A skinfold caliper is a mechanical clamp used to measure the thickness of the fat layer beneath the skin. At defined anatomical sites — triceps, abdomen or thigh, for example — the skin and underlying fat are pinched between two fingers, compressed by the caliper jaws, and the thickness is read off the scale. The instrument has no electronic parts and passes no current through the body, which is what distinguishes it from bioelectrical impedance scales and can be an advantage for people with implants such as pacemakers. Its value lies not in a single reading but in repeated readings at the same sites over time, so keep both the measurement sites and the person taking them as consistent as possible. Results become meaningful when combined with a body fat estimation formula. Technique improves with practice; it is normal for your first few readings to vary. Used in gyms, in dietitian follow-up and for personal tracking at home.
