Description
Paper points are compressed absorbent tips used to dry the root canal once instrumentation and irrigation are complete. A point is carried to working length with tweezers, withdrawn once it has taken up moisture, and the step is repeated with fresh points until one comes out dry. Moisture left in the canal prevents the sealer from wetting the canal wall and the gutta-percha from seating with a proper seal, so this step directly governs the quality of the obturation. Points are made in sizes corresponding to root canal file numbers; the size should match the apical preparation, since a point that is too narrow will not dry the canal and one that is too wide will not reach working length. The product is sterile and single use — points are never carried between patients. Paper points are also used to place intracanal medication and to observe exudate coming from the apex. Keeping the box closed prevents the points absorbing ambient humidity in storage.
