Description
A matrix band roll is the thin steel strip that temporarily replaces the missing proximal wall in Class II restorations, supplied by the metre rather than pre-cut. The difference from pre-cut bands is that the required length can be cut for each case, which gives flexibility across different tooth sizes and multi-surface restorations. The cut strip is loaded into a Tofflemire or Siqveland matrix retainer and drawn tight around the tooth. How closely the band follows the proximal contour of the tooth determines whether the finished restoration establishes a healthy contact with its neighbour; a flat-wrapped band produces a flat proximal surface that can trap food. The cervical margin must always be supported with an interdental wedge. Each cut length is single use and discarded after the procedure, while the remainder of the roll should be kept dry and protected from corrosion. A 1 metre roll is an economical presentation for a high volume of restorations.
