Description
The Philadelphia collar is a two-piece cervical orthosis used where a high level of immobilisation is required. Front and back sections are shaped to the anatomy of the neck and joined with hook-and-loop fastenings, a design that lets the collar be fitted and removed even with the patient lying down. The 12 mm perforated plastazote gives the necessary rigidity while letting air through, which reduces perspiration during long wear. It is used on medical advice after severe cervical trauma, in cervical fractures and before and after neck surgery, and may also be chosen for disc and degenerative complaints. Size is set by neck measurement — correct alignment of the chin support determines how effectively the collar immobilises. A separate version with a front opening is produced for patients with a tracheostomy. Wearing time must always be set by a doctor.
