Description
A soft foam collar is the gentlest type of cervical support. Rather than fully immobilising the neck, the foam body reduces the range of motion and rests the area, which is why it is chosen for short-term use in stiff neck and minor strains. Its fabric cover sits comfortably against the skin and can be worn for long stretches during the day, clearly more comfortably than a rigid plastic collar. Size is chosen by measuring neck circumference — the right height matters for supporting the chin properly. In cervical disc problems, degenerative changes and post-trauma use, your doctor should decide which collar type is appropriate. Where firmer immobilisation is needed, a Philadelphia or Nelson collar is considered instead.
